Camper van builders by state

The densest concentration of van builders in the country, almost all of it along the Front Range between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Boulder and Longmont alone hold more shops than most states. Expect deep 4x4 and four-season expertise, and expect to queue for it.

San Diego and Orange County are Sprinter country, with premium and performance-leaning shops; the Central Valley and Bay Area lean toward ProMaster and Transit builds at more accessible prices. Portland is the west coast's most established custom-build cluster, with several shops that have been converting vans since long before vanlife had a name. Strong on Sprinter 4x4 and on high-end fabrication.

Spread out rather than clustered, which is unusual. DeLand, Jacksonville and North Miami Beach each support a shop and none of them compete for the same customer. The RVIA-certified option here starts lower than any other certified builder in the country. Ask any Florida shop about humidity and insulation specifically, because it is the one climate where getting that wrong shows up within a year.

Three shops, three different jobs. Brooklyn is the luxury end of the whole country, Rochester carries fifty years of accessible-vehicle engineering, and the Finger Lakes option will do electrical work on a van somebody else built. Small in number, unusually little overlap.
