View shopNo builders match all of those filters. Try removing one.
Sprinter, ProMaster or Transit decides half your shortlist before anything else does, because a lot of shops only work on one. Decide what you are driving, then find who builds on it.
A full custom shop and a systems installer are different businesses. If you already own the van and want solar and a heater fitted, most of this list will politely decline.
A van is a house with a drivetrain and both halves need attention. Find out before you pay a deposit whether they will see you again, and whether anyone near you will touch their work.
Almost every price on this page is the conversion alone. Add the chassis, tax and title, and the gap between a quoted $95k and what leaves your account is not small.
Listings here start from around $5k for a simple weekender build and run past $300k for a full custom expedition vehicle. The honest middle is $80k–$150k for a professionally built, four-season van with off-grid power and a wet bath. Note that most builders quote the conversion only, and the van itself is another $45k–$70k on top unless the shop sources it for you.
Less than you would think. A build takes months and involves two or three visits at most, so people routinely cross several states for the right shop. Proximity matters far more afterwards, for warranty work and servicing, which is worth asking about before you commit, because plenty of builders will not touch a van they did not build.
The Sprinter is the premium option with factory 4x4 and the tallest interior, and it costs the most to buy and service. The ProMaster is front-wheel drive and the widest inside, which lets a bed sit crosswise without a flare, and it is the best value of the three. The Transit splits the difference with AWD and the largest dealer network. Your choice narrows the builder list considerably, so make it early.
That the builder constructs to the RV Industry Association's standards for electrical, propane, fire safety and egress, and submits to periodic inspection. It is not a quality ranking and plenty of excellent custom shops are not members. But it is the closest thing the industry has to a floor, and it is often what an insurer or a finance company is really asking about.
Where builders publish a figure it is usually between six and sixteen weeks of shop time, but that is time in the bay, not time from deposit. The queue in front of you is the real number, and at established shops it can run past a year. Ask for both.
