Search this comparison and you will find a dozen articles explaining that vans are nimble and RVs are roomy, none of which contains a purchase price. That is an odd omission for a decision where the two options can differ by $300,000. A camper van and an RV solve the same problem in opposite directions, and once both sides are actually costed the answer stops being a matter of taste for most people.

The last row is the one nobody publishes and it reframes the whole question. Class C motorhomes outsell camper vans in the US by more than two and a half to one. Van life dominates the internet and the Class C dominates the road.
What the classes actually are
The naming is confusing and worth getting straight, because it changes what you are comparing. A camper van is technically an RV. Specifically it is a Class B, which is the smallest of the three motorhome categories and is defined by being built inside a van body rather than on a stripped chassis.
A Class B is a van, typically under 25 feet, with the original body intact. Everything happens inside the shell the manufacturer built. That constraint is what produces both its advantages and its limits.
A Class C is built on a van or truck cutaway chassis, which means the cab is from a van and everything behind it was constructed from scratch, usually with an overhead bunk above the cab. This is the mainstream family motorhome and it is the volume leader by a wide margin.
A Class A is built on a purpose-built or commercial bus chassis. It is the largest, the most expensive and the least mobile, and most owners tow a second vehicle behind it for everyday errands.
There is one more distinction inside the Class B category that matters commercially. A factory Class B is built by a manufacturer to a fixed floor plan and sold through dealers with a warranty. A custom conversion is a cargo van fitted out to your specification by a shop. Both are Class B vehicles and they are very different purchases, which the section on the middle ground below gets into.
What each one costs to buy
Here is the part missing from every comparison in this category. Both sides, priced.
The van side splits into two routes. A commissioned conversion starts with the chassis, and base cargo vans list from roughly $45,900 for a ProMaster up to about $53,100 for a Sprinter 2500, checked against manufacturer pricing in August 2026. On top of that sits the conversion. Across the 46 US builders in our directory who publish pricing, the median starting price for a build is $58,000 and the median shop's flagship runs to about $130,000.
So a realistic commissioned van is $100,000 to $185,000 all in, with a genuine budget route at $55,000 to $80,000 using a used chassis and a shop at the lower end. A factory Class B is a separate market and lists from about $140,000 to $260,000 depending on chassis and specification.
Verdict on purchase price: the RV is not the expensive option. A Class C overlaps almost exactly with a commissioned van and gives you roughly two and a half times the floor area for it. Express that as cost per square foot and a $150,000 Class C works out around $830 while a $150,000 van is around $2,100, because a van's cost is in fitting a great deal into very little rather than in the amount of stuff you get.
The one place the van wins outright on price is the bottom of the market. There is no $55,000 Class C worth owning, and there is a real $55,000 van, which is why the full range of camper van purchase routes matters more to the decision than the headline comparison does.

Access, which is really about where you can sleep
A van fits in a standard parking space, reaches dispersed camping down forest and BLM roads, and sits unremarkably on a residential street. An RV does none of those things. In practice, RVs cluster at the entrance to public land because that is as far in as they can get, while vans carry on down the track.
This is not a comfort difference, it is a difference in where you are allowed to be, and it compounds into money because free dispersed camping is the largest single saving available to anybody living on the road. Both categories run into the same municipal rules about overnight parking, but a van has far more options within them, which is why the practical question of where you can legally park resolves very differently for the two. Running costs, which compound over years
A converted van returns 15 to 22 mpg. A Class C returns 8 to 12 and a Class A 6 to 10. At the pump prices the EIA publishes weekly, a full-timer covering 12,000 miles a year spends roughly $2,200 in a van against $4,000 in a Class C. Over five years that gap alone is $9,000.
Servicing follows the same pattern, and worse. A van goes to any competent garage. A motorhome needs a shop with a bay tall and long enough to take it, which means fewer options, longer waits and higher labour rates. One vehicle instead of two
Most Class A owners tow a car, because you cannot run errands in a 40-foot bus. That is a second purchase, a second insurance policy, a second maintenance stream and a towing setup. Class C owners are split, with many managing without.
A van is your home and your car, which removes that entire category of cost and hassle. It also removes a category of complication most people do not consider until they own one: parking a towed vehicle somewhere legal while you take the motorhome to a service appointment. Space, and what it does over months
A separate bedroom, a bathroom you can turn around in, a kitchen with counter space, and somewhere to sit that is not the bed. For a two-week trip this is a luxury. Over a year it is often the difference between sustainable and not, and it is the single most common reason people move from a van to something larger rather than back into a house.
The specific thing space buys is the ability to be inside for a whole day without it feeling like punishment, which is exactly the scenario that ends van life for a lot of people in winter. Verdict: decisive win for the RV, and it grows with the length of the trip.
Capacity, which sets your independence
Bigger fresh, grey and black tanks, bigger batteries, often a generator. A Class C typically carries 40 to 60 gallons of fresh water against 20 to 40 in a van, which roughly doubles the interval between service stops.
That partly offsets the access disadvantage. A van can get further off the road but has to come back sooner. An RV cannot get as far in but can stay longer once it is there, and for people who park up for weeks at a time that trade lands in the RV's favour. Sleeping more than two people
A Class C sleeps four to eight as standard. A van sleeps two comfortably and four with a design compromise, usually a pop-top or bunks that eat the garage. The binding constraint is not floor area but weight, and a family van hits its payload ceiling long before it runs out of ideas, which is why payload arithmetic is the first thing to check for anybody considering a van for more than two people.

What the US market actually buys
Van life has a much larger share of the internet than of the road, and the shipment data makes that unusually clear.
The RV Industry Association reports that 342,220 RVs shipped in the US in 2025, up 2.5% on the prior year. Motorhomes accounted for 36,007 of those. Within that, Class C took 20,888 units, Class B van campers 8,217, and Class A 6,902. Class B was the only motorhome category to fall, down 1.6% while Class C rose 5.3%.
Two things follow from that. First, the factory camper van is a small and slightly shrinking category, which is part of why custom conversions exist at all: the shops fill a gap the manufacturers are not competing hard for. Second, the towable market dwarfs both, at 306,114 units, so anybody choosing between a van and a motorhome is already in a minority of the RV-buying public.
The association forecasts 332,400 to 366,100 units for 2026, with a median projection of 349,300. Worth reading with the right caveat attached: these are wholesale shipments from manufacturers to dealers rather than retail sales, so they describe supply rather than demand. They are still the best public picture of the market that exists.
Cheaper to buy is not cheaper to own
The comparison usually collapses these two questions into one, which is why it produces such mushy answers. They point in opposite directions.

The camping row deserves attention because it dominates everything else. A van dweller using dispersed camping most nights can spend nothing on accommodation. An RV owner mostly cannot, because the sites a big rig can reach are largely paid ones, and at $30 to $60 a night that is $900 to $1,800 a month before anything else. Over a year the running cost gap between the two is comfortably larger than the purchase price gap, which is the single most useful thing to know here.

Which one for which use
The trade resolves cleanly once you know how often you plan to move.

- Full-time, parked for weeks at a time. Class C. If you are not moving, comfort beats access and the fuel gap barely registers.

What it gives you is the access and drivability of a van with a manufacturer warranty, a service network, straightforward financing, standard RV insurance and predictable resale. What it costs you is layout freedom, since you take one of a handful of floor plans, and usually system capacity, since factory electrical and water specifications tend to sit below what a good custom shop will fit at a comparable price.
That trade suits a specific person: somebody who wants a van but does not want to spend nine months in a build queue managing specification decisions.
