A camper van costs $35,000 to $380,000 to buy, all in, and the median realistic project lands around $110,000. That range is absurd for a single product category, which is why searching for a price returns numbers that cannot both be true. They can. The figure depends almost entirely on which of four routes you take, and the routes differ far more than most buyers realise before they start making calls.
What a camper van costs to buy
Every price you will see quoted is one of four things, and confusing them is the single most common reason a budget turns out to be half of what the project needs. Here they are side by side, with the vehicle included in every figure.

The overlap between routes is smaller than it looks. A $110,000 budget buys a well-specified used conversion outright this month, or a new van with a mid-range commissioned build delivered in about a year. Those are different purchases with different risks, and the money is the least interesting difference between them.

The van underneath, priced from the manufacturers
Nearly every conversion price you will read excludes the vehicle, and this catches people constantly. A $60,000 build on a $65,000 van is a $125,000 project before tax, and that is an ordinary mid-range outcome rather than an extravagant one.
Base cargo van pricing, checked August 2026: the Ram ProMaster starts around $45,900 for a 1500 Tradesman low roof, the Ford Transit around $50,500 for a T-150 low roof, and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 cargo around $53,100. Those are advertised starting configurations and they will move with model year, options and destination charge.
They are also configurations nobody converts. A build needs the high roof, usually the longer wheelbase, and increasingly all-wheel drive, and specifying those takes you into the sixties or low seventies on any of the three. Budget $60,000 to $75,000 for a new van built to a converter's brief rather than the advertised number.

A used van with 40,000 to 80,000 miles typically saves $12,000 to $25,000 and is the single most effective lever on total project cost. It is also the decision that most affects which shops will work with you, since some will not build on a chassis they have not inspected, and buying a used camper van or a used chassis carries a different inspection list from buying a normal car.
What 46 US builders actually charge
Most cost guides publish one shop's price list or a writer's estimate. We had a better option available: 72 builders on file, 46 of whom publish a starting price and 45 a full range. The numbers below are not a forecast, they are what the market is asking today.
The median starting price for a conversion is $58,000, excluding the van. The quartiles are $35,000 and $115,000, and the median shop's flagship build runs to about $130,000. Across every listed builder's own range, the most expensive build they will do costs roughly twice their cheapest one, which means the number on a website is a floor rather than a price.

That distribution is the most useful thing on this page. The market is not a bell curve, it is two clusters with a thin middle. Two in five shops will start a build under $50,000 and one in four will not touch anything under $120,000, and almost nobody sits at $80,000, which is exactly the number most people arrive with after reading a generic cost guide. It is why so many first phone calls end in an awkward pause.
For anyone whose budget lands in that gap, the practical move is to pick a side rather than hunt for a shop in the middle. Either take a catalogue layout from a shop that starts low, or wait and buy properly from one that starts high. The full picture of what a conversion costs tier by tier makes that choice easier than the headline median does.
The number changes with the chassis
Chassis choice moves both halves of the project, and the effect on the build is larger than the effect on the vehicle. Sample sizes below are the number of listed shops that build on each platform, whether or not exclusively.

The last row explains something the rest of this category never does. Sprinter builds are not expensive because the van is expensive. They are expensive because shops that build on nothing else start at a median of $115,000, roughly double the all-chassis median, and those shops define what a Sprinter conversion looks like in most buyers' heads. Brooklyn Campervans is a clear example, publishing a range from $92,000 to $292,000 on Sprinters exclusively.
The ProMaster sits at the other end for structural reasons rather than quality ones. Square walls, a flat floor and front-wheel drive make it faster to fit out, so shops specialising in the ProMaster cluster in the lower price bands and the van itself is the cheapest of the three to buy. Choosing it over a Sprinter can move an all-in project by $40,000 without changing the specification of anything inside.
None of which makes the Sprinter a bad choice. It has the strongest resale, the widest aftermarket and the only mature all-wheel-drive option, and the shops that build on it include most of the country's best. It is simply the expensive door into the market, and it is worth walking through it deliberately rather than by default.
Route one: buying a used conversion
$45,000 to $130,000 all in, available this week, and the best value in the category for most buyers. Somebody else has taken the heaviest depreciation, discovered the shakedown faults and fixed them, and you skip a build queue that is commonly six to fourteen months.
The risk is that you are buying somebody else's decisions, including the ones behind the walls. A professionally built van from a shop with a name is a reasonably safe purchase. An unattributed self-build is a gamble on a stranger's electrical work, which is the failure mode that burns vans down, and it is why the discount on self-builds is so steep.
The underrated version of this route is buy used then upgrade. A sound $70,000 conversion plus $10,000 spent on the two systems you actually care about frequently beats a $110,000 new build, and it happens this month rather than next year. It also means you are buying at the point where depreciation on a converted van has already done most of its damage.
Route two: doing it yourself
$35,000 to $70,000 all in, and genuinely the cheapest route in cash. Materials for a comparable mid-range build run $15,000 to $30,000, tools another $1,000 to $5,000 if you are starting with nothing, and the time commitment is commonly quoted at 300 to 800 hours.
The honest version is that DIY wins clearly at the budget end and loses at the top. Insulating well and building a bed platform is achievable for most people. Designing a 600Ah electrical system that will not fail in a decade is specialist work and the failure mode is a fire. Plenty of good vans are hybrids: pay a shop for electrical and plumbing, do the carpentry yourself.
The cash gap also narrows more than expected once tools, rework and resale are counted, which is the whole substance of choosing between building it yourself and paying a shop. A self-build that took a year of weekends and sells at a 40% discount was not as cheap as the receipts suggested.
Route three: commissioning a build
$90,000 to $380,000 all in, and the route with the most variation and the least transparency. It is also the only one that gets you a layout nobody sells.
What separates the tiers is systems capacity rather than badges. A budget build is insulation, a bed, cabinetry, a fan and either a small battery or a portable power station. A mid-range build adds 200Ah to 400Ah of lithium, real plumbing, a diesel heater and a proper galley. A premium build adds design time, a wet bath, 600Ah or more and air conditioning that runs off the batteries overnight, which is the single feature that pushes a build into the top tier on its own.
The payment structure matters as much as the price. Expect a design deposit of $1,000 to $5,000, a build deposit of 25% to 50% when your slot comes up, two to four progress payments and a final payment on collection. The practical consequence is that you need roughly half the build cost available months before you have anything to drive, which is why financing a conversion is a different problem from financing a van and usually has to be solved separately.
Route four: buying a factory Class B
$140,000 to $260,000, off a dealer forecourt, with a warranty. This is the route most buyers never price, and for a certain kind of person it is obviously the right one.
What you get is a manufacturer warranty, a service network, standard RV insurance, straightforward financing and predictable resale. What you give up is layout freedom, since you take one of a handful of floor plans, and usually system capacity, since factory electrical and water specifications tend to sit below what a good custom shop fits at a comparable price.
It is also a smaller market than the internet implies. The RV Industry Association recorded 8,217 Class B van camper shipments in the US in 2025, down 1.6% on the prior year, against 20,888 Class C motorhomes. Those are wholesale shipments to dealers rather than retail sales, and they exclude custom conversions entirely, but they do show that factory vans are a niche the manufacturers are not fighting hard over. That gap is precisely where the conversion shops live.
The costs left out of every quote
Whichever route you take, add another 8% to 15% on top of the headline figure. None of the items below appears in a builder's price or a dealer's sticker, and together they are the difference between a plan and a shortfall.

Change orders deserve particular attention because they are the one you control. Every specification change after sign-off costs more than it would have at the start, sometimes several times more, because the shop has already cut material and sequenced the work. Deciding at week ten that you want a shower is not a $3,000 decision, it is a redesign.
Running costs are the other line worth modelling before you buy rather than after. AAA publishes annual driving cost research that gives a defensible cents-per-mile figure, and a van covering 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year reaches every service interval two or three times faster than the owner's instincts expect.
Where you buy moves the number
Regional variation gets asserted constantly and measured almost never. Here is what the directory shows, limited to states where we list at least three shops with published pricing.

Read that carefully, because it is not a cost of living map. Oregon is expensive because the shops there specialise in expedition builds, not because Oregon labour costs more than California's. Colorado has the deepest bench in the country at 15 listed shops, and that depth is what holds its median at $55,000 despite the Front Range carrying plenty of premium builders. Choice suppresses price more reliably than geography raises it.
Which means travelling for a build is often worth it. Shops routinely take customers from two states away, and flying out to collect and driving home costs less than the spread between a thin local market and a deep one.
What the purchase costs per month
A purchase price is hard to judge against anything. Converting it into a monthly figure is not, and it is the only way to compare a van against the rent you are currently paying.

A $200,000 rig costs $1,583 a month before it moves an inch, which is a mortgage payment across much of the country and sits outside every van life budget published on the subject. A $55,000 setup costs $383, which is why the tier you buy at decides the economics of the whole lifestyle more than any habit you adopt afterwards.
It also puts a floor under the resale question. Rent buys nothing back and a van does, badly but genuinely, and the difference between a shop with a reputation and an unknown one shows up entirely in that third column.
Getting more van for the money
Five levers, ordered by how much each is worth.
- Buy the chassis used. The largest single saving, worth $12,000 to $25,000, and it usually costs less in reliability than people fear on a van with full service history.
- Choose a ProMaster. Cheaper to buy and cheaper to fit out for structural reasons rather than quality ones. Worth up to $40,000 on the all-in figure against a Sprinter.
- Take a catalogue layout. A shop building its standard layout for the fortieth time is faster, cheaper and usually better sorted than one drawing yours from scratch.
- Skip all-wheel drive unless you genuinely need it. That is $8,000 to $12,000 that buys considerably more comfort spent inside the van than capability outside it.
- Buy used then upgrade. A sound $70,000 conversion plus $10,000 on the systems you care about often beats a $110,000 new build, and it happens this month.
The most consequential decision is the first one on the list and it is made before you speak to anybody, which is why working out whether to buy, build or convert is worth doing properly rather than defaulting into whichever route you happened to read about first.
What each budget realistically buys
Run the number backwards from what you have rather than forwards from what you want. Take the total available, subtract the van, then subtract 12% of the combined figure for the costs nobody quotes. What remains is your real build budget, and it is usually 20% to 30% below what people assume.

If the answer comes out lower than you hoped, the change with the most effect on it is the van rather than the build. Dropping from a new all-wheel-drive Sprinter to a used rear-wheel-drive one frees $25,000 or more, and that money buys far more comfort inside the van than all-wheel drive buys outside it for most people.
The cheapest quote and the best value are rarely the same shop, and you cannot tell them apart until every quote lists the same systems.
