Bed galleries show you thirty configurations and let you pick a favourite. That is a pleasant way to spend an evening and a poor way to choose, because most of those beds will not physically fit the van you are buying. Two measurements eliminate about half of them before taste gets a vote. Here they are, and here is what is left.
The width that decides everything
A crosswise bed needs your interior width to be longer than you are. That is the whole test. Lie across the van and your height becomes a horizontal measurement, and unlike a galley or a wardrobe, a person cannot be made 4 inches shorter to suit the plan.
The three common chassis are further apart on this than almost any other specification. Ram publishes a wall-to-wall cargo width of 75.6 inches for the ProMaster. Mercedes publishes a maximum width at the floor of 70 inches for the Sprinter. Ford quotes the Transit at 54.8 inches between the wheel wells, which is the number that matters once a bed platform sits down onto them.
Those are bare metal. Subtract the wall build, which is 2 to 4 inches per side once furring, insulation and panelling are in, and the finished numbers are what you actually sleep in.

Read the third column and the market makes sense. A ProMaster sleeps most people across the van as it comes, which is why the shops that build on it draw crosswise plans by default and why it is the cheapest route to a fixed double. A Sprinter does not, which is why nearly every crosswise Sprinter you have admired has bed flares bulging out of the rear quarter panels.
Height is the other gate, and it is a smaller one. Mercedes quotes 79 inches of standing height in a high roof and Ram quotes 76, so standing up is comfortable in both for anyone under about 6ft 2in. Where the roof height genuinely decides something is overhead: a stowed mattress and its platform take 12 to 16 inches, so a lifting bed needs the taller roof and a fixed bed does not care.

The bed is also the first decision in the build for a reason that has nothing to do with comfort. It is the only element with a constraint imposed from outside the van, so it goes at the top of the order layout decisions have to be made in and everything else arranges itself underneath.
Fixed crosswise
Across the back of the van with a garage underneath. It is the default for full-time couples because it does the one genuinely free thing available in van design, which is to use the same floor area twice by stacking it.
Nothing converts, so you can go to bed at 9pm or 2am without moving furniture, and the space beneath takes two bikes or a very large amount of gear. On a ProMaster it works at 136 or 159 inches of wheelbase with no modification. On a Sprinter it needs the 170 and, for most adults, flares as well.
The cost is all of your daytime seating except the cab seats. A fixed bed is not a sofa, and propping cushions against the back wall does not make it one. That trade is fine for two people who are outside all day and it becomes the reason people rebuild when the weather turns.
One decision inside this one is worth settling early: the bed height. Set it high and the garage underneath takes a bike upright, but you are climbing into bed and losing the headroom to sit up in it. Set it low and you can sit up comfortably while the garage only takes flat items. There is no correct answer, and it is the question the shops that specialise in Sprinter builds will ask you in the first meeting, because everything behind the rear wheels depends on the answer.

Fixed lengthwise
Down one side, front to back. It is the most efficient use of a short wheelbase and the only fixed bed that works in a narrow van, because the constraint moves from your height to the van's length, and vans have plenty of length.
It frees the opposite wall completely, which is where a full-height galley and a wardrobe go, and it leaves room for a real seat. That last part matters more than the specification sheets suggest, because it means the van is habitable indoors without anybody sitting on the mattress.
The trade is width rather than length. A single at 30 to 36 inches is generous for one. A lengthwise double at 48 inches is tight for two adults in a way you notice nightly rather than once, and whoever sleeps against the wall is colder unless the insulation behind it was done properly.
- Best for solo travellers, and couples who want a usable interior more than a wide bed.
- Needs nothing unusual. It is the plan for a 144in or 136in van.
- Costs you roughly a foot of sleeping width against a crosswise double.
Convertible dinette and couch beds
Seating that becomes a bed. It buys more daytime space than anything else available and charges a conversion every night in return, and the conversion is the part people underestimate on a specification sheet and overestimate in real life, in that order.
The mechanics vary and matter. A U-shaped dinette that drops its table to bed height is quick and produces a bed made of cushion seams. A pull-out slider produces a better sleeping surface and eats floor when deployed. A rock and roll bench is the fastest of all and the least comfortable to sit on for an evening.
For weekends this is usually the right answer and reliably the cheapest one, which shows in our directory data: the median starting price on a ProMaster build is $38,000 against $65,000 on a Sprinter, and the simpler bed is part of that gap. For full-time living, most people abandon it inside a year, and they abandon it in bad weather rather than in good.

Elevator and lifting beds
The platform raises to the ceiling on a motor, so the floor beneath is a garage by day and a bedroom by night. It is the only configuration that refuses the central trade entirely: you get the fixed bed and the daytime space, rather than choosing.
Ceiling height is the limit. The mattress has to go somewhere when it is up, and it takes 12 to 16 inches of the 76 to 79 you started with, so a lifting bed needs a high roof and somebody under about 6ft 2in walking beneath it. In a standard roof van it is not a conversation.
It is also engineering rather than joinery. There is a mechanism, a control system, the electrical capacity to run it, and structural attachment into the van's roof ribs rather than into furniture. Brooklyn Campervans built its name on a powered elevator platform, and the configuration is the clearest example of what shops doing bespoke structural work offer over a configured layout. The pricing reflects it: the seven Sprinter-only shops in our directory carry a median starting price of $115,000 against $65,000 across all forty shops that build on the chassis.
Murphy and wall-fold beds
A Murphy bed hinges up against a wall or the rear doors, doing the same job as an elevator bed by hand and for a fraction of the money. It appears in almost every bed guide and deserves a closer look than it usually gets, because it sits in a genuinely different place on the trade-off curve.
The appeal is that there is nothing to fail. No motor, no controller, no current draw, and a mechanism a competent shop can service anywhere. It folds in under a minute, which is a different proposition from converting a dinette, and it returns the full floor to you during the day.
The catch is where the bed goes when it is up. A vertical Murphy against the rear doors means you cannot open those doors with the bed stowed, and a bed folded against a side wall claims that wall permanently, so the galley loses the run it wanted. There is also a practical limit on mattress thickness, because a thick mattress folded against a wall projects far enough into the van to defeat the point.
It works best in shorter vans where a fixed bed would consume too much of the floor and a lifting bed cannot be justified. If you are working within about 52 usable square feet, it is one of the few ways to have a real mattress and a real floor, and it belongs on the shortlist alongside the five plans that fit a van of that size.
Bunks and sleeping more than two
Two or three berths stacked, usually across the rear or above a dinette. It is the only way to sleep four without converting something every night, which matters a great deal when children have bedtimes and adults do not.
The cost is the garage, which is the space a family most needs, and that tension is the central problem of family van design rather than an incidental one. Bunks also need less headroom each than people assume: 24 to 30 inches per berth is enough to sleep in and not enough to sit up in, which is a trade most children accept and most adults do not.
Weight is where this configuration actually binds. Four people are 400 to 550lb before anything they own, and that lands on top of a conversion that already weighs 1,200 to 2,000lb. NHTSA's tire guidance puts the vehicle's real limit on the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver's door edge, and that number, not the floor area, is what decides whether a family van is possible on the chassis you were planning to use.
The alternative for a fourth berth is a pop-top, which adds a sleeping platform in the roof rather than in the floor plan. It costs you roof area for solar, some fuel economy, and warmth in winter, since a canvas sided bed is a cold bed in November. It is more common in European vans than in US builds, and where it fits it is the most elegant answer available, because it is the only one that does not take anything from the floor.
Bed flares, and what five inches buys
Flares are moulded panels that replace the rear side windows or panels and push the interior width outward at bed height only. They are named constantly in bed guides and almost never measured, which hides the only interesting thing about them.
A typical pair adds around 5 inches per side. On a Sprinter that takes a finished 64 to 66 inches up to roughly 75 to 78, which moves the tallest person who fits crosswise from about 5ft 4in to about 6ft 3in. That is not an improvement, it is the difference between the configuration being available and not.
The costs are real and worth knowing. They are a permanent modification to the body, they add two more sealed joints to a vehicle that has to stay watertight for a decade, and they are visible from outside. Fitted, expect $2,500 to $5,000 as part of a build. Against the alternative, which is a different chassis or a different bed, that is usually the cheaper answer, and it is one of the few modifications that reliably holds its value at resale because the next buyer wants the same width you did.
Mattress, ventilation and the thing that ruins beds
The configuration decides where you sleep. These four details decide whether you sleep well, and the last one decides whether the mattress survives its second winter.
- Thickness, 5in to 8in. Under 5 is uncomfortable for full-time use. Over 8 starts eating the headroom above the bed, which is exactly where you have least to spare in a crosswise layout.
- Length against the standard sizes. US mattresses run 75in for a twin or full, 80in for a queen, and 74 to 75in for an RV short queen. A finished ProMaster at 70 to 72in needs a cut mattress, and cutting a spring mattress ruins it. Specify foam or latex if the bed is not a standard size.
- Getting out at night. A bed where one person climbs over the other is a slow, reliable source of resentment. In a crosswise double, both people should be able to reach the floor.
- Ventilation underneath. This is the one that matters most and appears least.
Condensation is the failure nobody warns about. A sleeping body puts out around a pint of moisture a night, and a mattress lying on a solid plywood platform has nowhere for it to go. The underside stays damp, and in an insulated box in October it grows mould within weeks. Slats with a gap, or a ventilated underlay mat, cost under $150 and solve it completely, and it is worth naming to the shop rather than assuming it was in the plan.

The bed does not set that figure on its own, but it moves you within the range more than most single choices, because it dictates chassis, wheelbase and how much structure the shop has to build.

The number that catches people is not the bed. It is that a crosswise bed on a Sprinter drags a longer wheelbase and a set of flares along with it, so a decision that reads as free on a drawing arrives as several thousand dollars on a quote, which is why bed orientation belongs in the first conversation rather than the third.
