You have looked at a hundred camper van floor plans and every one of them looks possible. None of the galleries tells you how wide a van is, which is the one number that decides whether the plan you saved will fit the van you are buying. Here are the five plans that survive contact with a tape measure, and the measurements that eliminate the rest.
The number that decides your floor plan
Interior width is the first constraint, because it decides whether you can sleep across the van or have to sleep along it. A person is roughly 6ft long and that dimension does not negotiate. Every other element in a van can be made smaller.
The three chassis that carry almost every US conversion are not close to each other on this. Mercedes publishes a maximum width at the floor of 70 inches for the Sprinter. Ram publishes a wall-to-wall cargo width of 75.6 inches for the ProMaster, which the company describes as roughly 6ft 3in. That 5.6 inch gap is the most consequential difference between the two vans, and it is why the same floor plan is comfortable in one and impossible in the other.

Those are bare metal figures and you will not get them. Walls, furring and insulation take 2 to 4 inches off each side, so a Sprinter that reads 70 inches on the spec sheet finishes at 64 to 66, and a ProMaster finishes at 70 to 72. A 5ft 10in person fits crosswise in the finished ProMaster. The same person does not fit in the finished Sprinter, which is why bed flares exist and why which way the bed runs is not a preference so much as an output of the chassis you bought.
This is also why shops specialise. The shops building on ProMaster draw crosswise plans as a matter of course, and the shops building on Sprinter draw lengthwise plans or quote you for flares. Neither is being difficult. They are both working with the width they have.
Height is the second constraint and it is more forgiving, because all three high roofs land within three inches of each other. Mercedes quotes 79 inches of standing height, Ford 77 and Ram 76. Anyone under about 6ft 2in stands up in all three, and above that nobody stands up in any of them, so height rarely decides between chassis. What it does decide is whether a lifting bed is possible, because that plan needs to store a mattress overhead and still leave you room to walk underneath it.
What a floor plan is actually spending
A floor plan is a budget, and the currency is square feet. Mercedes publishes 374 cubic feet of cargo volume in a 144 high roof and a 79 inch standing height, which works out at about 57 square feet of floor. The 170 publishes 488 cubic feet, or about 74 square feet. Take the wall build off the sides and you are planning against roughly 52 and 68.
Now spend it. These are the areas each element takes, and the total is why every van is a compromise rather than a shortage of imagination.

Add a crosswise bed, a galley, a wet bath and a walkway and you are at 55 to 70 square feet before you have found anywhere to sit. That arithmetic, not taste, is what produces the five plans below.
1. Crosswise bed with a garage
Fixed bed across the back, garage underneath, galley down one side, seating at the front. Nothing converts and nothing folds, so you can get into bed at any hour without moving anything, and the space under the bed swallows two bikes.
It is the default full-time layout for a reason. The bed and the storage occupy the same 25 square feet twice, once vertically, which is the only genuinely free trick in van design. Everything else in a van costs something.
The catch is width. On a ProMaster it works at 136 or 159 inches of wheelbase without modification. On a Sprinter it needs the 170 and usually bed flares as well, and people who try it on a 144 end up choosing between the bed and the galley within the first year.

2. Lengthwise bed down one side
The bed runs front to back along one wall, which frees the opposite wall for a full-height galley and a wardrobe. It is the most efficient plan for a short wheelbase and the only fixed-bed plan that works in a narrow van, which is why it turns up so often in Transit conversions, where Ford quotes 54.8 inches between the wheel wells and a bed platform has to sit down onto them.
The trade is sleeping width rather than length. A lengthwise single at 30 to 36 inches is generous. A lengthwise double at 48 inches is tight for two adults in a way you feel every night rather than notice once, and the wall you sleep against is cold in winter unless the insulation behind it was done properly.
It also buys back the thing crosswise plans lose. Because the bed only takes one side, the other side can carry a proper seat, so the van is habitable in bad weather without anyone sitting on the mattress.
- Best for solo travellers, and couples who value daytime space over bed width.
- Costs you roughly a foot of sleeping width against a crosswise double.
- Needs nothing unusual. It is the plan that fits a 144in or a 136in van.
- Typical build cost $45,000 to $85,000.
3. Elevator bed over an open garage
The bed lifts to the ceiling on a powered platform, so the same floor area is a garage during the day and a bedroom at night. It is the only plan that does not force the bed against everything else, because the bed stops occupying floor at 8am and starts again at 10pm.
Height is what makes it possible and what limits it. A Sprinter high roof gives 79 inches of standing height and a ProMaster high roof gives 76, and a stowed mattress plus its platform takes 12 to 16 of them. Below about 76 inches you are choosing between standing up and having a bed overhead, which is not a choice most people enjoy making twice a day.
This is engineering rather than joinery. It needs a mechanism, the electrical capacity to run it, structural mounting into the van ribs, and somebody who has built one before. 4. Convertible dinette
A seating area that becomes a bed. It buys more daytime space than any other plan and charges you a conversion every night, which sounds trivial written down and is the most common reason people rebuild a van that was otherwise fine.
The reason it keeps appearing is that it is the only plan where the same 16 square feet does two jobs without a motor. A dinette seats four, and a fixed bed seats nobody. For weekends, for shoulder-season trips and for anyone whose van is a vehicle rather than a home, it is usually the correct answer and reliably the cheapest one. Our directory data puts the median starting price for a ProMaster build at $38,000 against $65,000 on a Sprinter, and the simpler plan is a large part of that gap.
Where it fails is full-time use in bad weather, which is the same moment it is supposed to shine. Converting the bed to sit down, then converting it back to lie down, three times on a wet Tuesday, is what wears people out.

5. Garage-first
Built backwards from what you carry rather than from how you live. A tall garage takes the rear third of the van, the bed sits above it or lengthwise ahead of it, and the galley shrinks to a single unit with a two-burner and a sink.
This is the plan for a motorbike, a wheelchair, a pair of e-bikes standing upright, or ski and climbing gear for two people who are out in it every day. Upright bikes need 42 inches or more of garage height once you have measured the actual bike with its wheels on, and that height has to come from somewhere.
It is the least comfortable of the five to live in and the only one that solves its problem, which is a fair description of most engineering decisions. Weight is the constraint people miss: a garage full of heavy equipment sits behind the rear axle, and what the van can legally carry binds long before the garage runs out of volume.

Read it as a subtraction exercise. Two of these five will be wrong for you on the wheelbase alone, and a third will be wrong on seating. That usually leaves two real candidates, which is a workable place to start drawing.
The table changes shape entirely above two people. A third and fourth berth has to come from bunks, a pop-top or a convertible, and each of those takes back exactly the daytime space the plan was chosen to protect. It is also the point at which weight rather than floor area becomes the binding constraint, which is why building a van around a family is a different arithmetic problem rather than the same one with a bigger van.
What each plan costs to build
Layout galleries never attach money to a plan, which makes them enjoyable and useless. Across the 46 US shops in our directory that publish pricing, the median starting price for a conversion is $58,000, and the plan you choose moves you within that spread more than most single specification decisions do.

Two things fall out of that table. The chassis and the plan move together, so a cheap plan on an expensive van is rarely cheap. And the gap between the top and bottom row is $60,000, which is more than the entire starting price of most builds, so this is not a detail to settle after you have chosen a shop.
The pattern behind those numbers is that fixed structure costs money and moving parts cost more. A convertible dinette is cushions on a frame. A crosswise bed with a garage is a load-bearing platform, tie-down points and a rear door opening that has to clear whatever goes underneath. An elevator bed adds a motor, a control system and a structural attachment to the roof ribs. Each step up that list roughly doubles the hours a shop books against the section, and labour is the third of a build that never shows up as a line item on the quote.
Choosing by elimination, not by inspiration
Every layout gallery is additive. Here are thirty ideas, pick the one you like. That works if you have unlimited space, and you have about 52 square feet. The faster route is to knock plans out.
- Is your finished interior width under 68 inches? Crosswise is out unless you are paying for flares. That removes one plan and usually settles the chassis question at the same time.
- Is anyone in the van over 6ft 2in? Crosswise is out regardless of the van. Bodies do not compress.
- Do you need to sit indoors, facing another person, for three consecutive rainy days? Crosswise and garage-first are out. This is the test that matters and the one nobody applies in July.
- Do you carry something bulky and rigid? Convertible and lengthwise are out. You need a garage and there are only three plans that have one.
- Is the van a home or a vehicle? If it is a vehicle, the convertible dinette is probably right and you have just saved yourself $30,000.
- Do you want an indoor shower? It takes nine square feet from whichever plan survived, which is why a van with a bathroom is a different exercise rather than an added extra.
Run those six and you will usually be left with one plan, occasionally two. If you are left with none, the van is too small for what you are asking of it, and that is worth discovering now rather than in month four of a build.
The order you ask the questions in matters as much as the questions, and the sequence layout decisions have to be made in is what stops you designing something that turns out to be impossible.
What it costs to change your mind
Furniture is cheap to redo. Everything a floor plan implies underneath the furniture is not. Tank positions, the grey water route, the run from the battery bank to the inverter, the hole in the roof for the fan and the reinforcement under the bed platform are all built into the structure around them.
That is also a standards question rather than a taste one. The RVIA standards that govern how plumbing, fuel-burning appliances and electrical systems are installed apply to the routes and the mounting, not just to the fittings, so moving a shower is not moving a shower. It is redoing a certified installation.
In practice a layout change after the first fix costs 40% to 70% of what that section of the build cost the first time, and it costs weeks. That is the real argument for spending a fortnight on the floor plan. A fortnight is free and a rebuild is not.
The cheap insurance is two hours of masking tape. Tape the plan out full size on a garage floor, put a chair where the seat goes, and move between the positions you would actually occupy on a wet evening. People who do this change something significant almost every time, and the change costs nothing at that stage.
