Ask three van builders what a conversion costs and you get three numbers that do not overlap. One says $30,000, the next says $95,000, and neither will tell you what the other is doing differently. That gap is where budgets die, usually about six months in, when the spec you assumed was included turns out to be a change order. So we read the published pricing off every shop in our directory and put the whole market in one place.
What a camper van conversion costs
A professional camper van conversion costs between $10,000 and $300,000, with a median starting price of $58,000. Across the 46 US builders in our directory who publish pricing, the median shop's work tops out near $130,000. Those figures are for the build alone. The van underneath it is a separate cheque, and that is the single biggest reason quotes look inconsistent when you first start calling.
Three tiers explain almost all of the spread. A budget build gives you a bed, insulation, power for your phone and somewhere to put things. A mid-range build adds a real electrical system, running water and heat. A premium build is a small house that happens to have a steering wheel, and it is priced accordingly.
What 46 US builders actually charge
Most cost guides publish one shop's price list, or a writer's estimate of what things should run. We had a different option available: 72 builders on file, 46 of whom publish a starting price and 45 a full range. So the numbers below are not a forecast. They are what the market is asking today.
The first thing the distribution shows is that the market is not a bell curve. It is two clusters with a thin middle, which is exactly why the quotes you collect feel so far apart.

Two in five shops will start a build under $50,000. One in four will not touch anything under $120,000. Almost nobody sits in the $80,000 band, which is the number most people arrive with after reading a generic cost guide, and it is why so many first calls end in an awkward pause.
The second thing worth knowing is how wide each shop's own range is. The median builder's most expensive build costs twice their cheapest one. The number on the website is a floor, not a price, and the floor is usually a stripped layout on the smallest wheelbase they offer.
The three tiers, and what each one buys
Tier names are marketing, so ignore them and look at the systems. What separates a $30,000 build from a $95,000 one is almost entirely electrical capacity, plumbing, and whether anything was made to fit rather than bought off a shelf.
Budget: $10,000 to $35,000
A budget build is a well made box. Insulation, a floor, a fixed or convertible bed, some cabinetry, a roof fan, and either a small battery or a portable power station you charge while driving. Water is jerry cans and a hand pump. There is no bathroom and no heater.
This tier is honest work and it suits weekend use, trips of a week or two, and anyone who would rather spend the money on the van itself. What it will not do is a winter, or a month off grid. Shops in Arizona cluster here more than anywhere else in the country, with a median starting price of $36,000.
Mid-range: $45,000 to $85,000
This is where a van becomes livable year round. Expect 200Ah to 400Ah of lithium, 200W to 400W of solar, a 20 to 30 gallon fresh water tank with a 12V pump, a diesel heater, a real galley with a fridge and a two-burner cooktop, and a cassette toilet or an outdoor shower.
Most full-time van dwellers are in this band, and most of the builds you see on the road came out of it. It is also the tier where builders differ most, because there are a dozen defensible ways to spend $60,000 and each shop has its own opinion about which of them matter.
Premium and full custom: $90,000 and up
At this level you are buying design time, not just parts. A layout drawn for you, cabinetry cut to your dimensions, 600Ah or more of battery, 800W of solar, an inverter charger with shore power, air conditioning that runs off the batteries, and usually a wet bath.
The ceiling is higher than most people expect. Brooklyn Campervans quotes up to $292,000 on a Sprinter, and they are not the top of the market. Shops in Oregon have the highest median starting price in the directory at $120,000, which reflects a concentration of expedition and overland specialists rather than a cost of living effect.

The van is a separate cheque
Nearly every conversion price you will see quoted excludes the vehicle, and this catches people constantly. A $60,000 build on a $65,000 van is a $125,000 project before tax, and that is a normal mid-range outcome rather than an extravagant one.
Base cargo vans list in the high forties to low fifties. The 2026 Ram ProMaster starts around $45,900, the Ford Transit around $50,100, and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 around $50,800 with destination, all checked in August 2026. Those are base configurations, though, and no converter builds on a base configuration.
Specify what a build actually needs, high roof, the longer wheelbase, and increasingly all-wheel drive, and you are into the sixties or seventies. A used van with 40,000 to 80,000 miles typically saves $12,000 to $20,000 and is the single most effective lever on total project cost. It is also the decision that most affects which shops will work with you, since some will not build on a chassis they have not inspected.
Chassis choice moves the build price too, not just the vehicle price. The ProMaster's square walls and front-wheel drive make it the cheapest to fit out, which is why ProMaster specialists skew toward the lower price bands. Sprinter shops skew high, partly because the van attracts a customer who wants more, and partly because the tapered walls mean more of the cabinetry has to be cut rather than bought.
Where the money goes inside a build
Roughly speaking, a mid-range build divides into thirds: about a third in electrical and plumbing, about a third in cabinetry and finish, and about a third in labour that never shows up as a line item. The systems below are where the quotes diverge most.
Electrical, the line item that decides the tier
This is the biggest single variable and the one worth understanding before you talk to anyone. A 200Ah lithium bank with 200W of solar and a modest inverter lands around $3,000 to $5,000 installed. Double the battery, add an inverter charger, shore power and 600W of solar, and you are at $10,000 to $15,000. Air conditioning that runs overnight without a hookup effectively requires the second system, which is why it pushes builds into the premium tier on its own.
Water and plumbing
A jerry can and a foot pump costs under $200. A 25 gallon fresh tank, a grey tank, a 12V pump, an accumulator and a hot water heater runs $1,500 to $3,500. Add an indoor shower pan, a wet bath enclosure and on-demand hot water and it reaches $6,500. The jump is not the parts, it is that a bathroom forces the entire layout to be drawn around it.
Cabinetry and the stuff you never see
Insulation, sound deadening, furring strips, fasteners, adhesive and wiring loom rarely appear in a quote as anything other than a materials line, and they are commonly $1,500 to $3,000 of it. They are also the parts you cannot go back and fix. A shop that skips sound deadening to hit a price has made a decision you will live with for the life of the van.
The costs that are not in the quote
This is the section every other cost guide leaves out, and it is worth more than the rest of them combined. The build quote is not the project cost. Budget another 8% to 15% on top of the combined van and build figure for the items below.

Change orders deserve particular attention because they are the one you control. Every spec change after the design is signed off costs more than it would have cost at the start, sometimes several times more, because the shop has already cut material and sequenced the work. Deciding late that you want a shower is not a $3,000 decision at week ten, it is a redesign.
Insurance is the other one that surprises people. Carriers price a converted van inconsistently because it does not fit their categories, and a build carrying RVIA certification is usually easier and cheaper to insure as a recreational vehicle. Running costs are worth modelling too, since a full-time van covers the mileage of two or three normal cars, and AAA publishes annual driving cost research that gives a defensible cents-per-mile figure to plan against.
How builders take your money
Almost nobody explains this before your first call, and it changes what you can afford more than the headline price does. Professional shops work on milestones, not a lump sum at the end.
- Design deposit, $1,000 to $5,000. Buys drawings and a slot in the queue. Sometimes refundable before build start, often not.
- Build deposit, 25% to 50%. Due when your slot comes up. This is the big one, and it is usually needed months before the van is finished.
- Progress payments, 2 to 4 of them. Tied to stages such as insulation complete, electrical rough-in, cabinetry installed.
- Final payment on collection. Typically 10% to 25%, and no reputable shop releases the van before it clears.
The practical consequence is that you need roughly half the build cost available months before you have anything to drive. Financing a conversion is harder than financing a van, because a half-built vehicle is poor collateral. Most people who finance do it against the chassis, or with a personal loan, and pay the build from cash.
What the same build costs in different states
Regional variation gets asserted a lot and quantified almost never. Here is what the directory shows, limited to states where we list at least three shops with published pricing.

Read that carefully, because it is not a cost of living map. Oregon is expensive because the shops there specialise in expedition builds, not because Oregon labour costs more than California's. Colorado has the deepest bench in the country at 15 listed shops, and the depth is what keeps its median at $55,000 despite the Front Range having plenty of premium builders. Choice suppresses price more reliably than geography raises it.
Which means travelling is often worth it. A build is a one-time purchase and shops routinely take customers from two states away. Flying to collect and driving home costs less than the spread between a thin local market and a deep one, and California's nine listed shops cover a wider spread of tiers than most.
Work out which tier your budget puts you in
Run the number backwards from what you have rather than forwards from what you want. Take your total available budget, subtract the van, then subtract 12% of the combined figure for the costs that are not in the quote. What remains is your real build budget, and it is usually 20% to 30% below what people assume.
- Under $80,000 all in. A used van and a budget build, or a used van and a partial build you finish yourself. Realistic and common.
- $80,000 to $130,000 all in. A used or base new van and a mid-range build. This is the bulk of the market and where the most shops compete for you.
- $130,000 to $200,000 all in. A new van specified properly and a strong mid-range or entry premium build.
- $200,000 and up. Full custom, and worth choosing the shop on design capability rather than price.
If the answer comes out lower than you hoped, the highest-leverage change is the van, not the build. Dropping from a new AWD Sprinter to a used rear-wheel-drive one frees $25,000 or more, and that money buys considerably more comfort inside the van than all-wheel drive buys outside it for most people. The vans we rate most highly are not uniformly the most expensive ones.
DIY versus paying a shop
A DIY conversion is genuinely cheaper in materials and genuinely expensive in everything else. Materials for a comparable mid-range build run $15,000 to $30,000, tools another $1,000 to $5,000 if you are starting with nothing, and the time commitment is commonly quoted at 300 to 800 hours.

The honest version is that DIY wins clearly at the budget end and loses at the top. Building a bed platform and insulating well is achievable for most people. Designing a 600Ah electrical system that will not fail in a decade is a specialist job, and the failure mode is a fire. Plenty of good builds are hybrids: pay a shop for the electrical and plumbing, do the carpentry yourself.
Five questions that change the number on your first call
Quotes are not comparable until you have normalised them, and most people spend their first three calls collecting numbers that measure different things. These five questions do most of the normalising.
1. Does this include the van, and if not, will you source it?
The answer is almost always no to the first part. The second part matters more than it sounds: a shop with dealer relationships can often get a chassis months sooner than you can, and in a tight market that is worth real money. Some mark it up, some pass it through at cost. Ask which.
2. What is in the base price, system by system?
Get it in writing as battery amp hours, solar watts, fresh water gallons and heater model. Two shops quoting $65,000 can differ by 400Ah of lithium, which is a $6,000 gap hiding inside identical numbers. If a shop will not put system specs in the quote, that is the answer to a different question.
3. What is your change order policy and rate?
You want the hourly rate, the markup on parts, and the point in the build after which changes are refused outright. A shop that has thought about this has a written policy. A shop that has not will improvise it at your expense in month four.
4. What is the queue, and what is the build time?
These are two different numbers and the first is usually longer. A shop quoting a four month build with a nine month queue hands you the keys in thirteen months. Ask when your deposit converts from refundable to committed, because that date is often when the queue starts rather than when the build does.
5. What does the warranty cover, and who honours it?
One to three years is typical on the build. The questions that matter are whether appliances are covered by the shop or only by their manufacturers, whether you have to return to the shop for warranty work, and what happens if you are 2,000 miles away. Shops with a dealer or partner network can handle this remotely and most cannot.
The cheapest quote and the best value are rarely the same shop, and you cannot tell them apart until every quote lists the same systems.
