Everybody knows a Sprinter conversion costs more. The explanation everybody gives is that the van is expensive, and that explanation is wrong. A Sprinter cargo van lists within a few thousand dollars of a Transit and a ProMaster. The conversions on top of it run tens of thousands apart. We hold published pricing for 46 US builders, which is enough to say precisely where the money actually goes.
What a Sprinter conversion costs
A professional Sprinter conversion costs $65,000 at the median starting price, and a typical builder's range tops out around $150,000. Add the chassis and a finished Sprinter camper runs $110,000 to $200,000 for most buyers. A self-build on the same van is $15,000 to $45,000 in parts, plus 600 to 1,200 hours of your own time.
Those medians come from our own listings rather than from an estimate. Of the 40 builders in our directory who will build on a Sprinter, half start at $65,000 or above. The seven shops that build on Sprinter and nothing else start at a median of $115,000, which is the single most revealing number in this whole guide.
The chassis, before anyone touches it
Start with the part everybody gets wrong. Mercedes-Benz lists the Sprinter cargo van from $48,990, rising to around $75,830 once you specify a long high-roof AWD with the high-output engine and the options that go with it.
Now set that against the alternatives. Ford opens the Transit cargo van in the high forties and Ram opens the ProMaster in the mid forties. The three vans that dominate the US conversion market start within about $4,000 of each other.

Read the last two columns together. The chassis spread is about $4,000 at the base and maybe $14,000 fully configured. The conversion spread is $27,000 at the median. Whatever is making a Sprinter build expensive, it is not the sticker on the windscreen.
What builders actually charge for a Sprinter
Across the 46 US shops in our directory that publish pricing, the picture by chassis is consistent and stark. It is worth seeing the sample sizes, because these are not three anecdotes.

Most shops in the directory build on more than one chassis, which is what makes the bottom row so useful. The seven that have committed to Sprinter alone start at nearly double the Sprinter median and more than triple the ProMaster median. Nobody arrives at a $115,000 starting price because of the van they bought.
One of those Sprinter-only shops is Brooklyn Campervans, whose published range runs $92,000 to $292,000 and whose signature is a powered elevator bed. That is the shape of the segment: a specific chassis, a narrow menu, and a piece of engineering that would not be attempted on a cheaper build.
Geography moves the number as well, and not in the direction most people guess. Median starting prices across the states where we hold enough listings to compute one run from $36,000 in Arizona to $55,000 in Colorado to $120,000 in Oregon. That is not a labour-rate effect, it is a clustering effect: certain regions attract the shops working at the top of the market. Anybody price-shopping the builders working on this chassis should widen the search geographically before concluding the market is expensive.
Why Sprinter costs more, and it is not the chassis
Three things are actually happening, and none of them is the price of the van.
Selection. Shops choose a chassis to match the customer they want. A builder aiming at $40,000 conversions works on ProMasters because the customer who wants a $40,000 conversion is price-sensitive and the ProMaster is the widest van for the money. A builder aiming at $150,000 conversions works on Sprinters because that is what their customer already decided they wanted. The chassis is a signal of the customer, and the price follows the customer.
Specification creep. Sprinter buyers specify more. AWD, a lift, four-season insulation, a diesel heater, air conditioning, lithium at 600Ah, custom joinery. Each of those is a genuine cost, and they cluster on the same builds. The chassis did not cause it, but it reliably comes with it, and it is why a full system-by-system breakdown of what a build costs matters more than the badge on the grille.
Fitment economics. The Sprinter has the deepest aftermarket of any van in the US, which cuts both ways. Everything exists for it, and everything that exists for it is priced for a market that has already demonstrated willingness to pay. A Sprinter-specific part is frequently 20% to 40% dearer than the equivalent for a Transit.
The practical consequence is that a buyer who wants a Sprinter for the drivetrain and the service network, but does not want a $150,000 build, is not stuck. They are looking for the shops in the lower half of the Sprinter distribution, and that is a question about how to choose a van builder rather than about which van to buy.
144, 170 and 170 extended, priced
The wheelbase decision is described in every guide and priced in none. It moves the chassis price by a few thousand dollars and the conversion price by considerably more, because a longer van is not just more van, it is more of everything that goes in it.

The 144 is the one that fits in a standard parking space and most garages, and it is the one people regret least in cities. The 170 is where a fixed transverse bed and a separate seating area both fit without a compromise, which is why it dominates full-time builds. The extended is a specialist choice, and it is long enough that where you can legally park overnight starts to narrow noticeably.
What AWD and 4x4 actually add
Factory AWD adds roughly $6,000 to $10,000 to the chassis once the packages it requires are included, and it is rarely available as a standalone box. It is the single largest option-level decision on the van.
An aftermarket 4x4 conversion is a different animal and a different number, generally $18,000 to $35,000 fitted, and it usually arrives alongside a lift kit at $3,000 to $4,000 and all-terrain wheels and tyres at $2,000 to $2,500. Budget $25,000 to $45,000 for the full off-road treatment on top of the conversion.
Whether that is worth it depends on an honest answer about where the van will actually go. Most van dwellers spend the overwhelming majority of their nights on graded dirt that a two-wheel-drive van with good tyres handles perfectly well, which is the uncomfortable part of the case for a four wheel drive camper van. AWD earns its money in snow and on wet grass, not on trails.
Where the conversion money goes
The systems inside a Sprinter cost what they cost in any van. What changes is the tier at which they get specified.
- Electrical, $4,000 to $16,000. The largest single line in nearly every build, and the one that doubles the moment air conditioning enters the specification.
- Cabinetry and joinery, $1,800 to $9,000. Custom curved faces that follow the van wall are the difference between the two ends of that range.
- Heating and cooling, $1,500 to $10,000. A diesel heater is $1,000 to $1,500. A 12V air conditioner starts near $4,000 and drags the electrical system up with it.
- Insulation and sound deadening, $800 to $5,000. Sprinter buyers overwhelmingly specify the four-season end of this.
- Water and plumbing, $900 to $6,500. Hot water is the step change, adding $900 to $2,000 and a fuel line.
- Windows and glazing, $900 to $5,000. Double-glazed four-season units are over $1,100 a pair before the trim rings.
- Exterior, $1,500 to $14,000. Racks, awnings, storage boxes and lighting. None of it makes the van more liveable.
A DIY build using the lower half of every one of those ranges lands at $15,000 to $25,000 in parts, which is why the gap between self-building and commissioning is mostly labour rather than materials.
What a Sprinter costs to run and service
This is the section every cost guide on this chassis skips, and it is a real ongoing premium rather than a one-off.
The engine is diesel, and the EIA publishes diesel and gasoline prices side by side every week. Diesel has traded above gasoline for most of the last several years, which offsets some of the fuel economy advantage the drivetrain gives you. Add diesel exhaust fluid, which is cheap but not free and is not optional.
Servicing is the bigger issue. A Sprinter needs a Mercedes commercial van dealer or a diesel specialist, and the network is thin outside metros. Routine service runs $400 to $900 against $150 to $400 for a Transit at any Ford dealer in the country. A significant fault a long way from a dealer is a genuinely different experience on this chassis, and it is worth weighing against the fact that a Transit can be fixed almost anywhere.
Insurance also runs higher on a Sprinter, partly on the vehicle value and partly on the build value carried inside it. That second part is the one owners get wrong, and getting the conversion declared correctly on the policy is the whole substance of insuring a converted van.
Resale, the part that closes the gap
The Sprinter premium is not lost, it is lent. Converted Sprinters hold value better than converted Transits and considerably better than converted ProMasters, for the same reason they cost more in the first place: the buyer at the other end wants one.
That matters more than the purchase price for anyone planning to sell. Two vans bought at $130,000 and $95,000 that resell at $85,000 and $52,000 have consumed $45,000 and $43,000 respectively over the same period. The cheaper van did not save the money it appeared to save, and this is the argument that most often justifies a Sprinter to somebody who resisted the sticker.
The effect is strongest on professionally built vans from shops with a name, and close to absent on self-builds, which are valued by buyers as a van plus somebody else's decisions. How much of the premium actually comes back is the practical question behind what a converted van is worth on resale, and it is worth modelling before assuming the money is recoverable.
Who should not buy a Sprinter
Every guide on this subject assumes the reader has already decided. Some of them should not have.
If the budget for the finished van is under about $90,000 all-in, a Sprinter forces compromises that a ProMaster does not. At that number you are buying the cheapest available build on an expensive chassis instead of a well-executed build on a cheaper one, and the second is the better van to live in.
If you will mostly stay on pavement and mostly stay near cities, the case thins further. The ProMaster is wider inside, front-wheel drive with a flatter floor, cheaper to buy, cheaper to service and available at every Ram dealer. If you are cross-shopping seriously rather than shopping for a badge, the shops working on Transit start $15,000 lower at the median and offer nearly the same interior.
The Sprinter earns its money on long trips, in winter, at high mileage and for anyone who intends to sell the van rather than run it to the ground. Outside those cases it is a preference, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as it is priced as one.
