A van build budget starts as a list of parts and ends as a number nobody recognises. The spreadsheet said $18,000 and the card statement says $31,000, and the gap is never one catastrophic mistake. It is eleven separate systems that each ran forty per cent over, and nobody caught it because nobody had a benchmark for what any single system should cost. Here is that benchmark, system by system, with the labour priced too.
What a camper van build costs
A camper van build costs $4,000 to $88,000 in parts and materials, and most DIY builds land between $16,000 and $33,000. That is the conversion only. The van underneath it is a separate number, and the single most common budgeting error we see is quoting one figure that quietly blends the two.
The range is that wide because two of the eleven systems scale almost without limit. A lighting and USB electrical setup is $1,200. The same van with lithium storage, an inverter that runs an induction hob and a 12V air conditioner is $16,000, and it does the same job of keeping the lights on. Ambition, not van size, sets the total.
Two published DIY ledgers are worth holding against those bands as a sanity check. A well documented Ford Transit build came in at $20,150 for the first van and $34,495 for a more ambitious second, which brackets the mid-range row almost exactly. A heavily specified AWD Transit with lithium, air conditioning and a lift kit ran $59,100 in parts. Nothing in this category is mysterious once the systems are separated out.
The eleven systems, priced at three tiers
Every van build is the same eleven systems in a different order. Reading down this table is the fastest way to find out which line in your own spreadsheet is wrong, because the tier you have chosen for one system is usually the tier you have chosen for all of them, and a single row sitting two columns out is where budgets break.

Electrical is a third of the build on its own
This is the largest line in almost every build ever published, and the one where the tiers are furthest apart. A 100Ah lithium battery, a 200W panel, a small charge controller and a handful of circuits comes to $1,200 to $3,000 installed by you. The same system at 400Ah with a 3,000W inverter, dual charging from the alternator and shore power, and enough panel to keep up in November is $10,000 to $16,000.
The step that costs the money is not the battery, it is what you decided to plug in. Induction cooking, a compressor fridge and a laptop is a modest load. Add air conditioning and the whole system has to be sized around a few hours of compressor draw, which triples the battery bank and forces a bigger inverter, a bigger alternator charger and heavier cable throughout.
Wiring, fusing, bus bars, switches and outlets add $300 to $900 on their own and are the most commonly forgotten sub-line. They do not feel like a purchase because no single item costs much, which is exactly why they end up unbudgeted.
Batteries are also heavy. A 400Ah lithium bank is roughly 100 lb before the inverter and cable, which matters because payload on a converted van runs out well before the space does on most chassis.
Insulation and sound deadening
Between $400 and $5,000, and the top of that band buys diminishing returns. Sheep wool runs around $150 per 100 square feet and a full van takes three to four times that. Rigid XPS board is cheaper at roughly $47 a sheet. Closed cell spray foam applied professionally is $1,500 to $3,000 and is the only route that reliably gets into the ribs.
Sound deadening is the line people either skip entirely or spend $2,500 on. Butyl mat over the large flat panels costs $150 to $300 and removes most of the drumming. The ceramic and liquid applied products that cost ten times that are quieter still, and whether that difference is worth $2,200 is a question only somebody who has slept in both can answer honestly.
Neither of these is optional in a van you intend to sleep in through a shoulder season. An uninsulated van in the mountains is a fridge with a mattress in it, and the heating system you then buy to compensate costs more than the insulation would have.
Walls, ceiling and floor
$350 at the bottom, $7,500 at the top, and the difference is entirely material choice. Luan at $23 a sheet and a laminate click floor at $45 a box gets a van lined for under $500. Baltic birch, a commercial grade contract floor and an L-track system running the length of both walls comes to $4,000 or more, and the L-track alone can be half of it.
The cost that surprises people is fitment rather than material. Every panel in a van is a curve, so a $23 sheet becomes two $23 sheets the first time you cut one wrong. Budget one full sheet of waste for every three you plan to use and the number stops moving.
Cabinetry, bed and furniture
$750 to $12,000 across the two lines together. Repurposed kitchen carcasses and a plywood bed frame is $500 to $1,200. Custom joinery with soft-close hardware, curved faces that follow the van wall and a lift or slide mechanism on the bed is $5,000 to $9,000 in materials before anybody has been paid to build it.
Hardware is the sneaky part. Gas struts, hinges, catches, drawer runners rated for road vibration and enough fasteners to hold it all together runs $400 to $1,200 in a mid-range build. Ordinary domestic drawer runners do not survive a washboard road, so the cheap version of this line gets bought twice.
The bed is where cost and layout collide. A fixed platform is the cheapest thing in the van at $250 to $600. A powered lift bed of the kind Brooklyn Campervans built their reputation on is a five figure sub-assembly, and the reason it exists is that it converts the same floor area into two rooms. Which end of that you need is decided by the bed layout you settle on rather than by budget.
Water, plumbing and the toilet question
A jerry can, a foot pump and a bar sink is $150 to $400 and works perfectly well. A 20 to 30 gallon fresh tank at $299 to $450, a grey tank, a 12V pump, an accumulator, a water heater and an outside shower point comes to $3,000 to $6,500 by the time the fittings are counted.
Water heating is the step change. Going from cold water to a diesel or propane hot water system adds $900 to $2,000 and pulls in a fuel line, a mounting location and a service schedule. It is the single upgrade that most often turns a simple plumbing job into a complicated one.
Toilets span $25 to $4,000 with almost nothing in the middle. A bucket with a seat is $25. A cassette is $60 to $200. A composting unit is $780 to $1,000. A wet room with a tray, a door and a fan is a four figure project that also eats three feet of van, which is why the trade-off between that and a gym membership is the real decision behind building a bathroom into a van.
Heating and cooling
Heating is the cheaper half. A diesel air heater is $1,000 to $1,500 for a branded unit installed by you, and a portable propane heater is under $100 if you accept the condensation and the carbon monoxide monitoring that comes with it. Diesel is what almost every professional build fits, because it draws from the vehicle tank and does not add moisture to the air.
Cooling is where the money goes. A roof fan at $160 to $350 is enough in dry heat and useless in humidity. A 12V air conditioner starts around $4,000 and reaches $5,300 for the units built for vans, and then it drags the electrical system up a tier with it. The honest way to budget air conditioning is to price the unit and then add $3,000 to $6,000 of battery and inverter behind it.
Nobody regrets the heater. Plenty of people regret the air conditioner, usually after discovering that the answer to heat in a van is generally to drive north.
Windows, fans and the holes you cut
Windows run $150 to $500 each for a half-slider and $1,100 or more a pair for double-glazed four-season units. Then there are the jambs. Custom trim rings around each opening are $200 in plywood if you make them and $1,300 for a fitted set, which is a line item most people have never heard of until they have a hole in the side of their van.
The roof fan is the highest value item per dollar in the entire build. Every hole you cut is also permanent and is the point at which the van stops being a cargo van in the eyes of an insurer, which is worth knowing before the hole saw comes out rather than after.
Exterior and suspension
This is the tier with no ceiling. A roof rack ranges from $650 for a plain galvanised platform to $4,000 for a fabricated safari rack. A lift kit with adjustable shocks is $3,975. All-terrain wheels and tyres are $2,400. An awning is $400 hand-cranked or $2,000 motorised. Exterior lighting, a nudge bar and rear door storage can add another $6,000 between them.
None of it makes the van more liveable, which is why it belongs at the end of the list. It does make the van more capable and more sellable, and on a Sprinter chassis it is a large part of why a Sprinter conversion costs what it does relative to the alternatives.
The line nobody prices: labour
Every cost breakdown published on this subject stops at the parts. The most rigorous DIY build log in the category records 640 hours on one van and estimates around 1,000 for the finished thing, and then never converts that number into money. It is the largest missing figure in this entire category.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for RV service technicians at $23.05 an hour and the mean at $24.37. A shop bills that technician out at somewhere between $95 and $150 an hour once premises, insurance, tooling, warranty and everything else is loaded on top. Both numbers are worth seeing side by side.

That table explains the whole category. A professional conversion is not marked up parts, it is 800 hours of skilled labour with a business wrapped around it, and the parts are the smaller half. It also explains why the honest answer to building it yourself against paying a shop is not about money at all once your own time is priced at anything above zero.
The hours are also elapsed time, not calendar time. Eight hundred hours at fifteen hours a week is a year, which is why how long a van conversion takes is the question that quietly kills more DIY projects than money does.
What the same systems cost when a shop fits them
We hold published pricing for 46 US builders who put real numbers on their websites, which lets us put the DIY figures next to the market rather than next to one person's receipts. The median starting price for a conversion is $58,000 and the median top of a builder's own range is $130,000. Twenty-five per cent of shops start at or below $35,000, and 41% start under $50,000.
Hold that against the parts table. A mid-range DIY build is $15,000 to $33,000 in materials. The median shop entry price is $58,000. The difference of roughly $30,000 on an entry-level professional build is almost exactly 300 hours at a shop rate, which is what an entry-level build takes. The pricing in this market is not arbitrary, it is hours.
The same logic runs through the chassis figures. Shops that build on Sprinter have a median starting price of $65,000 against $50,000 for Transit and $38,000 for ProMaster, and the shops that build on Sprinter exclusively start at a median of $115,000. That gap is far wider than the chassis gap: Mercedes-Benz lists the Sprinter cargo van from $48,990 and the Transit cargo van opens several thousand below it. It is a different class of shop taking a different kind of job, which is the thing raw parts lists can never show you.
Geography moves it too. Median starting prices run from $36,000 in Arizona to $120,000 in Oregon across the states where we hold enough listings to compute one, and the spread says more about which shops set up where than about local labour rates.
Fixed systems against scalable ones
Splitting the eleven systems by whether they can run away from you is more useful than splitting them by room. Roughly $4,000 to $7,000 of any serious build is close to fixed. The rest is a decision.

This is the part that changes behaviour. People trying to save money on a build almost always attack the left column, because those are the purchases that feel wasteful. Saving $200 on insulation while specifying air conditioning is backwards, and it is the most common shape of a blown build budget we see.
The costs that sit outside the materials list
None of these appear on a parts spreadsheet and together they add $3,000 to $12,000 to a self-build.
- Tools, $200 to $2,000. A jigsaw, a track saw, a rivet gun, clamps and a crimper you use once. Most of it is unrecoverable.
- Somewhere to work, $0 to $500 a month. A driveway is free. A rented bay for eight months is not, and this is the cost that scales directly with how long the build takes.
- Parts bought twice, $500 to $3,000. Every published build log contains a list of things replaced with what should have been bought first. Assume it will happen and hold a contingency rather than pretending it will not.
- Living costs while the van is undriveable. If the van was going to be the accommodation, every month of build is a month of rent that was supposed to have stopped.
- Registration, inspection and title changes. State dependent, usually a few hundred dollars, and occasionally the thing that requires a system to be re-done.
- Insurance on a vehicle you cannot yet use. Comprehensive cover during the build, and then a policy rewrite the day it becomes a camper.
Add 20% to whatever your eleven systems total. Every experienced builder we have spoken to says the same thing, and the ones who did not add it say it with more feeling.
Where to cut without cutting the van
There is a clear order to this, and it is not the order most people work in.
- Drop air conditioning: saves $7,000 to $12,000. The unit and the electrical system it forces. Larger than every other saving available.
- Skip the fixed bathroom: saves $2,000 to $5,000. A cassette toilet and a gym membership does the same job and gives back three feet of van.
- Buy joinery hardware once, at the right grade: saves $500 to $1,500. This is a saving made by spending more on the first attempt.
- Leave the exterior until year two: saves $3,000 to $14,000. Racks, lifts, tyres and awnings can all be fitted later, to a van you now know how you use.
- Size the electrical to your actual loads: saves $3,000 to $8,000. Most people specify for a fortnight they will have twice and pay for it every day.
- Take the cheaper chassis: saves $10,000 to $20,000 before you cut a hole. A ProMaster is the widest van for the money and the cheapest to buy, and it carries through to the build.
Notice that none of those are about shopping harder. Every meaningful saving in a van build is a specification decision made before anything is ordered, which is also true of professional builds and is why the shops that come in cheapest are usually the ones offering a tighter menu rather than the ones cutting corners.
One more thing worth weighing. The AAA research on what running a vehicle costs is a reminder that every dollar in the build sits on top of depreciation, insurance and maintenance on a vehicle that already costs money to own. The build is the visible number. It is not the whole number.
