Almost everything written about this industry is written about the top of it, which is useless if your budget is $40,000. Read enough of it and you conclude a professional build is out of reach and start pricing plywood. It is not out of reach. 41% of the builders we list will start a build under $50,000. The work is knowing what that money genuinely buys and where cheap turns into a false economy.

What the affordable end of the market looks like

Every guide to this question lists shops. None of them tells you the shape of the market, which is the thing you actually need: is a $40,000 budget normal, or are you hunting a unicorn? Across the 46 US builders we track with published pricing, here is the answer.

The distribution is not a smooth curve, it is barbell-shaped. Two clusters, one at each end, and a thin middle. The median start across the whole market is $58,000, but the 25th percentile is $35,000, which means a quarter of professional shops in the country will begin a build for less than the price of a mid-range car.

That thin middle is worth understanding because it explains a frustration many buyers report. If your budget is $65,000 you are shopping in the emptiest part of the market, and you will find yourself choosing between a well-specified build from a budget shop and a stripped build from a premium one. Both are reasonable. Neither is what you pictured.

One more figure sets expectations honestly: the median shop's own range spans about two times from its cheapest build to its most expensive. A shop advertising from $35,000 typically builds up to around $70,000. So a low starting price tells you where a shop begins, not where you will end up once you have specified what you need.

Chassis is the biggest single lever

Not one competing guide mentions this, and it moves the number more than anything else you decide. Which van you convert sets the price of converting it, and the reason is geometry rather than quality.

A $27,000 gap in median starting price between ProMaster and Sprinter shops is not a coincidence and it is not a comment on workmanship. Two things drive it. The ProMaster has near-vertical walls and a low flat floor, which means cabinetry can be cut square instead of scribed to fit a curve, and scribing is skilled labour billed by the hour. And the chassis itself is cheaper to begin with, typically $13,000 to $15,000 below a comparable Sprinter before anybody starts work.

The Transit sits between the two on both counts, usually $15,000 to $20,000 below a comparable Sprinter, with a strong dealer network that keeps servicing cheap once you are on the road. If four-wheel drive matters, the gap widens again: Sprinter all-wheel drive runs roughly $7,000 to $12,000 above the Transit equivalent.

None of which makes the ProMaster the right van for everybody. It is front-wheel drive, and if your plan involves forest service roads in March that matters more than the saving. But if the plan is national parks and paved campgrounds, choosing a shop that specialises in ProMasters is the single largest saving available to you that costs nothing in build quality, and Transit specialists are the next best compromise.

Where you shop moves the number too

Geography matters less than chassis, but it is not nothing, and it works in the opposite direction to most people's assumption. Depth of local competition suppresses price. Distance from home does not raise it much.

Arizona's listed shops have the lowest median starting price we record at $36,000. California's nine shops sit at $50,000 across a wider spread of tiers. Colorado, with the deepest bench in the country at fifteen shops, sits at $55,000 and offers by far the most choice at any given budget.

The practical move is to widen the search radius rather than narrow it. Flying to collect a finished van and driving it home costs a few hundred dollars, against state-level differences in the tens of thousands. The one genuine cost of distance is warranty convenience, so ask how a fault is handled when you are three states away before you decide it does not matter.

What each budget actually buys

A budget professional build is a well made box, and there is nothing wrong with that. What separates the tiers is not finish quality, it is capability: how long you can stay away from a hookup and how cold it can get before you leave.

The three things that separate a van you can use for a fortnight from one you can live in through a winter are a heater, a battery bank that will run it, and insulation good enough that the heater is not fighting the walls. Those three are why the $35,000 to $50,000 band exists as a distinct tier rather than a slightly better version of the one below it.

What under $50,000 does not usually include is a bathroom. A wet room takes floor area, water capacity, grey tank capacity and structural work, and it is the single most expensive feature per square foot in a van. A gym membership at $25 a month solves showers nationwide, which is why so many experienced full-timers skip it deliberately rather than reluctantly. How to get more van for the money

Five decisions do almost all the work, and not one of them involves accepting worse workmanship.

  • Buy the van used. The largest lever by a distance. A three to five year old chassis saves $12,000 to $25,000, which is often more than the entire gap between two build tiers. It is also the saving that requires the most care, so it is worth knowing what to inspect on a used van before you commit.

  • Take a catalogue layout. A shop building its standard layout for the fortieth time is faster, cheaper and makes fewer mistakes than one drawing yours. The result is usually better sorted, not worse.
  • Specify smaller, not cheaper. Fewer amp hours from a good installer beats more amp hours from a bad one. This applies to water capacity, cabinetry and appliances equally.
  • Book an autumn slot. Shops fill summer first and quote their longest queues in spring. Winter work is often discounted and always faster.

The partial build, the cheapest safe route

This is the most underused option in the category and many budget shops offer it without advertising it, because it is worth less to them than a full build.

A partial or hybrid build means the shop does the work that is dangerous or hard to correct, then hands the van back for you to finish. Typically that is the electrical system, the roof and wall penetrations, the plumbing and sometimes the insulation. You do the carpentry, the trim and the interior fit-out at your own pace.

The economics are favourable because the expensive part of a build is skilled labour hours, and cabinetry is where most of those hours go. Handing the shop the specialist work and keeping the time-consuming work runs roughly $22,000 to $38,000, against $45,000 to $70,000 for the same finished specification done entirely by the shop.

It also removes the single biggest reason first-time self-builds fail, which is that people underestimate electrical and plumbing by a factor of two to four and then stall. Taking those off the critical path changes a project's odds considerably, and it is the honest middle ground in the choice between doing it yourself and paying a shop.

Two things to settle before you agree to one. Ask exactly where the handover line falls, in writing, because a van returned with a wiring loom run but not terminated is a very different object from one returned with a working system. And ask whether the shop will inspect and sign off your finished work afterwards, because a professional set of eyes on the completed build for a few hundred dollars is what makes the van insurable and saleable later rather than merely finished.

Where cheap becomes expensive

There is a floor below which savings start costing money, and unlike most advice in this category, the reasons are documented rather than asserted.

Electrical installation. A cheap system that fails is an inconvenience. A cheap system installed badly is a fire in a vehicle you sleep in. The US Fire Administration's analysis of highway vehicle fires found electrical failure or malfunction contributing to 21% of them across 2014 to 2016, and insulation around wiring or cables was the most common item first ignited at 29%. This is the line where the budget answer should be smaller rather than cheaper.

Insulation and vapour control. Behind the walls, impossible to improve without stripping the build, and the difference between a van that works in February and one that runs with condensation. Two people breathing and cooking in an enclosed metal box put a great deal of moisture into the air, and EPA guidance on moisture and mould sets the mechanism out plainly: warm humid air meeting a cold surface condenses, relative humidity wants to stay under 60%, and anything that gets wet needs to dry within 24 to 48 hours or mould follows. A van wall cavity does not dry in 48 hours. Skimping here saves a few hundred dollars and costs the usability of the vehicle.

Roof and wall penetrations. Every fan, window and solar mount is a hole cut in a waterproof box. Badly sealed, it admits water into a structure you cannot inspect, and water ingress is the most expensive fault in a used van precisely because it hides until it has already done the damage. Ask what sealant is used and how the aperture is prepared, because a shop economising in the right places will answer immediately and one economising in the wrong places will change the subject.

Does affordable mean worse?

This is the question underneath the whole search and every guide dodges it, so here is a straight answer: mostly no, and where it is yes, it is visible.

Most of the price difference between a $38,000 build and a $130,000 one is not workmanship. It is chassis choice, whether the layout is drawn or repeated, how much battery and water capacity is fitted, whether there is a bathroom, and how many hours of design sit in front of the build. All of those are specification decisions. A budget shop building a simple layout it has built forty times can be doing better work than a premium shop attempting something for the first time.

Where price does track quality is in the things you cannot see: how the electrical is terminated and fused, what insulation went in and how thick, and whether penetrations were prepared or just drilled and sealed. Those are cheap to do properly and cheap to skip, so they are exactly where a shop under margin pressure cuts. That is why the questions worth asking at this end of the market are about hidden work rather than about the finish you can photograph, and why the checks that separate a good shop from a weak one matter more here than at any other price point.

Certification helps as a floor. RVIA audits member plants against more than 500 safety-related standards requirements covering electrical, plumbing, heating and fire safety, and while plenty of excellent budget shops are not members, membership is at least a checkable claim rather than a promise.

There is one genuine trade-off at this end that is worth naming rather than glossing over: budget shops are smaller, and a smaller shop is more fragile. A two-person operation with a twelve month order book is one injury or one bad quarter away from a problem that becomes your problem, and warranty work from a shop that has closed is warranty work you pay for. That is an argument for checking trading history and for keeping your deposit exposure modest, not an argument for spending more.

  • Do you do partial builds? Many budget shops do and few advertise it. Asking directly costs nothing.
  • Who does the electrical, and are they certified? The most important hidden-work question in the whole conversation.
  • What is your cheapest recent build, and can I see it? Shops show you their flagship by default. You want to see the one built to a budget like yours.
