A used conversion is either the best value in this category or somebody else's expensive mistake, and the two look identical in photographs. There is no book value to check, no service history for the build, and the faults that cost the most are sealed behind panels. Buy the wrong one and you spend your first season stripping out work you already paid for. Here is how to tell them apart before the money moves.
Why used is usually the better buy
A professionally built van takes its heaviest depreciation in the first two to three years, and the second owner avoids all of it. A build that cost $110,000 new commonly changes hands at $70,000 to $80,000 with 30,000 miles on it, and by then the shakedown faults have been found and fixed at somebody else's expense.
You also skip the queue. Across the shops we track, a new build is six to twenty months away once the queue in front of your slot is counted, and that queue is usually longer than the build itself. A used van is available on Saturday, which is the same argument that makes a finished factory-built van attractive, without the factory price attached.
The reference number that decides whether an asking price is sane is what the same thing costs new. Across the 46 US builders we track with published pricing, the median starting price is $58,000 for the conversion alone and the median shop's flagship build runs $130,000. A four year old van being asked at 90% of a new equivalent is not priced, it is hoped.
What the law does and does not do for you here
This is the part nobody covering used camper vans mentions, and it changes how carefully you need to behave.
The FTC's Used Car Rule requires a dealer to display a Buyers Guide window sticker on every used vehicle, stating whether it is sold as is or with a warranty, what share of repair costs the dealer will cover, and which major systems tend to fail. It has been in force since 1985 and it is genuinely useful protection.
It applies to dealers. Most used camper vans are sold privately, by an owner on a forum or a marketplace listing, and a private sale carries no Buyers Guide, no warranty disclosure and no federal backstop. Whatever you fail to discover before you hand over the money is yours. State-level protections for private sales vary widely and several states offer none at all.
The practical consequence is that the inspection is not diligence, it is the entire protection. Budget for a professional one, expect to walk away from at least one van, and treat any pressure to skip a step as information about the seller rather than an inconvenience.
Two vehicles, one inspection
This is the framing that makes a used conversion tractable. You are buying a van and a house. They fail in completely different ways, they need different people to assess them, and most buyers inspect only the first.
The van underneath
Get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic who knows that chassis, not a general garage. It costs $150 to $300 for a workshop inspection and $200 to $600 for a mobile one, and it is the best money spent in the whole process. A thorough RV-level inspection takes six to nine hours on site, so a shop offering to do it in forty minutes is doing something else.
On a converted van, four things deserve more attention than they get. Rust in the wheel arches, sills and around the rear door frames, because the conversion hides the inner faces from you permanently. Service history for the diesel emissions system, which is the most expensive routine failure on these chassis. Whether the suspension has been upgraded to carry the extra ton of build. And any accident repair, since a straightened chassis and a fitted interior interact badly.
Run the VIN through the federal recall database before you travel. An open recall is not a reason to walk away, it is a free repair and a bargaining point, but it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.
Mileage matters less than instinct suggests on these platforms. A well maintained 90,000 mile Sprinter with a full record is a better purchase than a neglected 40,000 mile one, because the wear items on a commercial chassis are designed to be replaced and the neglect is not.
The build inside
This is where the money is and where almost nobody looks properly. The expensive faults are all invisible, which is exactly why they stay expensive.

What each fault should take off the price

The distinction that saves people money is between a dated consumable and an unknown. Batteries, tyres and heaters have a price you can look up, so they come straight off the asking figure and nobody should argue. Water and floor rot have no price until somebody removes a wall, and the correct response to an unpriceable fault is not a smaller offer, it is a different van.
Two or three deductions can quietly total more than the gap between this van and a new one. Once the arithmetic on a tired build gets close to what the equivalent tier costs to commission fresh, the used case has stopped working and it is worth saying so out loud rather than talking yourself into it.
Professional build or self-build
Ask who built it before you ask anything else, because the answer changes both what the van is worth and how much of your life it will consume.
A known shop's build comes with a name you can research, usually documentation, sometimes a transferable warranty, and occasionally certification. RVIA member plants are audited against more than 500 safety-related standards requirements covering electrical, plumbing, heating and fire safety, which is why a certified van is easier to insure, easier to finance and considerably easier to sell on.
A self-build might be excellent. The problem is that you have no way to verify what is behind the walls, and you inherit every decision the previous owner made at two in the morning. That is not an argument against self-builds, it is an argument for pricing them differently, and the gap between DIY and professional work is far wider on resale than it ever was on the original build cost.
If the seller names a shop, spend twenty minutes on it. Is it still trading? Does the work in the photographs match what that shop publishes? The checks we run before listing a builder are the same ones worth running backwards on a van that has already been built.
Valuing something with no book price
There is no published value for a one-off conversion, which is why asking prices in this market are so wildly inconsistent. The method that works builds the number from three parts rather than looking for one.

Treat those bands as a frame rather than an appraisal. No public dataset of camper van sale prices exists, so anybody quoting you a precise depreciation figure for a conversion has invented it. What the frame is genuinely good for is sanity-checking a seller who wants 90% of new for a four year old van, and for understanding why what a professionally built van is worth second-hand depends so heavily on whose name is on it.
Paperwork that decides how easy this van is to own
Five documents, and the absence of any one of them is a price adjustment rather than a talking point.
- Title classification. Titled as a van, or as an RV or housecar? An RV title makes insurance and financing markedly easier, and reclassifying after the fact means a state inspection you may not pass.
- Title history. Run the VIN through NMVTIS, the federal title database, which reports junk, salvage and flood brands plus the latest odometer readings. It covers 87% of the US vehicle fleet, so a clean result is reassuring rather than conclusive, and the state title record is the authority.
- Build documentation. Spec sheet, wiring diagram, appliance manuals, original invoices. Their absence turns a professional build into an undocumented one for valuation purposes, whatever the seller says.
- Weighed figures. Not the brochure numbers. An actual weighbridge ticket, loaded.
- Outstanding finance. A lien follows the vehicle rather than the seller. NMVTIS does not carry lien data, so this needs a separate check and, on a private sale, a written payoff arrangement before money moves.
Weight, and the problem you inherit
An overweight conversion is a legal problem that transfers with the title, and it is invisible without a ticket from a weighbridge. It voids nothing formally, but it puts you outside the vehicle's rating on brakes, tyres and suspension, and an insurer that finds it after a claim has a straightforward argument. Getting the build value and the weight both stated correctly is the part of insuring a converted van that owners most often discover they got wrong at the worst moment.
The numbers are less generous than they look once a build is in. Mercedes-Benz rates the Sprinter cargo van at a maximum available GVWR of 9,050 lbs on 2500 models, 11,030 lbs on the 3500XD and 12,125 lbs on the 4500, with payload on a standard-roof Worker at 4,211 lbs. A full conversion with water, batteries, gear and two people routinely uses most of a 2500's payload, which is why heavier builds sit on 3500 chassis and why a heavy build on a light chassis is a genuine finding rather than a technicality.
The viewing itself, in order
Sequence matters, because each stage is cheaper than the one after it and each can end the process.
- Before you travel. Photographs of the electrical panel, the roof, and the original build invoice. VIN for the recall and title checks. If any of those three is refused, you have saved a day.
- First ten minutes on site. Doors shut, sit still, smell. Then the roof. Then under the bed. Damp ends the visit.
- Next hour. Fill the water system and start the heater, then leave both running while you do everything else. Faults appear under load and time, not under inspection.
- Test drive. Radio off, windows up, at least twenty minutes including a rough surface. Listen for cabinetry noise as much as for the engine, because rattles at 50 mph are the build telling you how it was fixed down.
- Only then, the mechanic. Paying for a chassis inspection before you have ruled out damp is spending $300 to learn about the cheaper of the two vehicles.
